Ever since Plato’s allegory of the cave philosophers have pondered the problem of the reliability of human knowledge. The thought experiments of Rene Descartes (1596-1650) sharpen these concerns, but Descartes’ answers haven’t been widely accepted (though they probably deserve more attention than modern critics give them).
