Professor’s Prompt: For today’s writing exercise we’ll be thinking about the nature of change. In our class this semester we have contemplated how technological changes produce a myriad of reactions in our society from joyful excitement to fury. Let’s broaden our meditation today on the nature of technological change and consider this essay by Rebecca Solnit “Why Did We Stop Believing That People Can Change (Links to an external site.)?” where she contemplates the capacity for individuals to change.
2. After reading, ask yourself what you believe about the power of individuals to change and what you notice about society’s hesitation to believe in this possibility. How might this connect to the anxieties we discuss technological change?
Additionally, consider this question Rebecca Solnit poses in the essay:
“Are you who you used to be? Specifically, are you the person who made that mistake, held that view now regarded as reprehensible or ignorant, committed that harm years or decades ago?
