For this assignment, students are to consider all the theories covered in this class (text and supplemental readings) and their own personal beliefs.
Then, students are to identify what their personal philosophy in counseling is. What causes problems, what maintains problems, what reduces or eliminates problems?
All counselors have their own personal views and understandings of counseling, human development, and helping. The goal of this assignment is to have you identify your own views and understanding of counseling, as well as how you would practice as a counselor. It’s important to note that your philosophy can change and grow as you grow in your experiences and knowledge, so don’t feel pressured for this philosophy to be exactly perfect, you’re just starting to learn about counseling. Your personal philosophy should include your beliefs about human development and growth, your purpose as a counselor, the counselor/client relationship, and the theories that you tend to practice from or resonate with most. This is something you would share with a client to help them better understand who you are as a counselor.
