Your paper should be no more than five pages (about 1500
words). It should be double spaced with a 12 point font
You do not need to cite Kant, but if you do, just use the marginal
page numbers, ie. (4:455).
Paper topic:
Kant’s second formula of the categorical imperative, The
Formula of Humanity (FH) states, “so act that you use humanity.
whether in your own person or in the person of any other,
always at the same time as an end, (and) never merely as a
means” (4:430).
Write a paper that explains and evaluates this imperative. In
other words, you should write a paper that answers the question:
Is Kant right to say that “If I my action follows the FH
imperative, if I do what it says, it will necessarily be a moral
action”?
In your paper, you should include the following (in any order):
An answer to the questions:
1. Why does Kant think that treating someone “always at the
same time as an end and never merely as a means” is an action
that is the right thing to do and why treating someone merely as
a means is wrong?
2. Why does Kant think that this imperative has its source in
reason?
And:
3. A comparison of two examples of an interaction that you
might have with someone else (or even yourself): one in which
you do not use humanity at the same time as an end, and one in
which you do use humanity as an end and not merely as a
means.
You should then use these examples to show either that Kant is
right that the FH does give us actions that are morally good, or,
that he is wrong and that there is a better way for an action to
have moral worth.
