If you look at the map on page 327 in your textbook, you can see the impact of the bomb’s detonation. Everyone in the small area closest to detonation is dead, as well as many people in the next concentric circle that covers most of the capital buildings. The third circle, encompassing the Supreme Court and Library of Congress buildings represents the official contamination zone. This area will need extensive demolition and clean up, if it can ever be inhabited again. The radioactive plume has drifted toward Maryland, and people there are frightened.
As the District tries to recover, identify and analyze at least four legal issues that will need to be addressed.
Consider:
As the search of the contamination zone begins, what should happen with illegal drugs and contraband found by the searchers?
What about demolition and removal of buildings and their contents as part of the cleanup?
Other legal aspects covered in previous chapters–liability, safe working conditions, torts and exemptions, the writ of habeus corpus
Provide citations from your textbook as you prepare your response.
