Case #1 – Jennifer is a 25 year old college student on the verge of graduating. Over the past three months, she has been dating a young man age 21. They get along well and enjoy each others company. Her parents have an issue with the relationship. The young man, Alex, was born in Peru and speaks Spanish as his primary language. He speaks and understands English but feels more comfortable in Spanish. Jennifer understands Spanish but is more comfortable in English. They have begun to talk about marriage. Jennifer’s parents have raised several issues. They said that marriage is difficult enough and the divorce rate is high. Add the cultural difference and the chances of the marriage’s success drop significantly. The parents oppose the marriage saying they simply want Jennifer to be happy in the long run. Statistics seem to verify the parents position. But Jennifer does not want to end a relationship based on statistics.
What should Jennifer do? Why? how would you make the recommendation to Jennifer?
