Answer the questions listed below in an essay, double-spaced.
Feminist theory has evolved over the years, and now encompasses several strands. These various
theoretical strands explore distinctive components of women’s inequality, both at the institutional and
interpersonal levels of social analysis. Drawing from class lectures and videos, and, most of all, from
the pdf E- posting readings and the assigned chapters in Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive
Introduction (5th Edition, @2018) co-authored by Rosemarie Tong and Tina Fernandes Botts, write an
essay which offers a comparative analysis of the varieties of feminist thought to date.
In your essay, make sure to: a) define feminism first, and then b) compare and critically analyze two strands of feminist thought from among the following choices:
1. Liberal Feminism [Readings: Tong & Botts, Feminist thought, Chapter 1]
2. Radical Feminism [Readings: Tong & Botts, Feminist thought, Chapter 2]
3. Marxist and Socialist Feminism [Readings: Tong & Botts, Feminist thought, Chapter 3]
4. U.S Women of Color’s Feminism and Intersectionality [Readings: Tong & Botts, Feminist thought,
Chapter 4; Hill Collins (2015) E-Posting Reading; and Martinez (2005) E-Posting Reading]
5. Third Wave/Queer Feminism [Readings: Tong & Botts, Feminist thought, Chapter 10; and Butler
(1988) E-Posting Reading]
Your essay should demonstrate: a) your clear understanding of the key terms and arguments
presented by the theorists of each of your chosen strands of feminism; b) your critical
comparative evaluation of your chosen strands; and c) your argument for the theoretical
perspective or perspectives that you find most persuasive and useful for understanding
contemporary gender inequality.
Important Note: To answer the essay question, please make sure to follow and use the writing instructions
explained in writing handout uploaded. Additionally, make sure to engage substantively with the required
course readings and lecture material. Please remember that the strongest papers are those that engage with
the course readings via quotes and which provide strong and detailed explanation and analysis.
Best Wishes!
