1-2 page paper on We Germans answering the following prompt:
We Germans is a book about the twin experiences of defeat and guilt. Using specific examples from the book, discuss how Meissner (the grandfather) comes to realize that Germany has been defeated and what that does to his sense of responsibility for what took place on the Eastern Front during World War Two. What did he see during the war that convinced him that Germany was defeated and that maybe it deserved such a defeat, and why did he continue fighting?
Rubric
The paper will be graded on whether you can draw from specific examples throughout the book to illustrate the ways in which Meissner experienced the disintegration of the German army and came to feel guilty (or perhaps just shameful) for his participation in the war. Rather like the first paper, all I’m looking for is evidence that you’ve read and thought about the book.
